علم الأنساب هو العلم الذي تعرف به سلالات الأقوام والقبائل، وترصد به أرحام العائلات والأسر. وهو عند العرب من العلوم الشريفة التي اعتنوا بها عناية كبيرة في جاهليتهم وإسلامهم على حد سواء، مع اختلاف في الدوافع والمقاصد. فإن كان أصل العلم ومنبعه في الجاهلية العصبية القبلية، فإن الإسلام -الذي هذب نفوس العرب- جعل منه علماً شريفاً بريئاً من نوازع الحمية والفخر، وتدفع المشتغلين به رغائب حفظ الأنساب، ومعرفة أقدار الأسر والرجال، وبيان الأرحام بما تقوم عليه واجبات وحقوق شرعية، وتبنى عليه أحكام فقهية. ولما كان لهذا العلم هذا القدر العالي من الفضل والشرف، فقد اشتغل به الرجال ذوو القدر العالي من الفضل والشرف. ولا أدل على ذلك من أن الصديق أبا بكر رضي الله عنه كان من أعلم قريش بأنسابها.
والباحث "عبد الله بن محمس آل عاصم" واحد من العلماء الذين اهتموا بهذا العلم حيث حرص على إعداد كتابه هذا وذلك ليحفظ نسب مذحج (مالك) بن أدد، بوصل ما انقطعت عنده مصادر النسب المكتوبة بما هو قائم من مصادر نسب نسله في القبائل المذحجية الحالية. ومصادره في نسب القبائل الحالية من نسل مذحج هو ما اجتمع لديه من معلومات خلال مسيرة حياته وإطلاعه الواسع العميق المتدبر في التراث عموماً وكتب النسب على وجه الخصوص، واشتغاله على مدى السنين الطويلة -بحفظ الرواية في ذلك من شيوخ القبائل، والثقات من نسابيها، وما حصل عليه من مدونات الأنساب لدى بعض الشيوخ وأرباب العائلات.
وبيناً لمنهجه في تفصيل الكتاب، فقد جعله في بابين. الفصل الأول لرصد نسب مذحج وأبنائه ونسلهم حتى انقطاع المصادر المكتوبة. والباب الثاني لقبائل مذحج الحالية بالمملكة العربية السعودية، وفي كل باب عدة فصول، وهم كافة من ينتمون إلى قحطان في المملكة مع أحلاف قليلة من قحطان، وربما من غير قحطان.
