يضم الكتاب مبحثاً نحوياً تناول فيه مادة الفعل في العربية، وذلك للمكان المهم الذي يحتله الفعل في كلام العرب وللأهمية اللغوية لهذه المادة في التفكير النحوي القديم. ويبدو أن هذه المادة قد شغلت حيزاً كبيراً في كتب النحويين الأقدمين ورسائلهم، غير أنهم على شدة اهتمامهم بالفعل قد شغلوا أنفسهم بمباحث أبعد ما تكون عن العالم اللغوي، كما أدى بهم إلى إهمال مسائل كثيرة لم تدخل في منهجهم الذي رسموه لأنفسهم. وسيلجو المؤلف، ومن خلال كتابه هذا، جوانب من العلم النحوي القديم، مفصلاً فيه القول ليخلص إلى حقائق نحوية تأخذ من القديم مادة فتبني عليها شيئاً جديداً.
