ليس المقصود بهذا الكتاب أن يكون مجرد تلخيص سريع لنظريات البناء الاجتماعي أو للآراء الكثيرة المختلفة التي تعالج المشكلات العديدة المتعلقة بهذا الموضوع الشائك المعقد. وإنما المقصود به عرض موقف معين ووجهة نظر محددة تتعلق بدراسة المجتمع، والمنهج الذي ينبغي اتباعه، والموضوعات الهامة التي تفرض نفسها على الباحث، وبخاصة الباحث الجاد الذي لا يكتفي بالمناقشات النظرية أو بالدراسات الحقلية أو الميدانية التي لا تستند إلى نظريات محددة واضحة المعالم، بل يحاول المزاوجة بين الاثنين بقصد الوصول إلى تحقيق دقيق وفهم عميق للمجتمع الذي يدرسه. وعلى ذلك فيجب ألا يتوقع القارئ أن يجد في هذا الكتاب- بأقسامه الأربعة عن "المفهومات" و"الأنساق" و"القيم" و"التغير"- عرضًا سريعًا موجزًا لمختلف الآراء والأفكار والمناقشات التي تمتلئ بها كتب علم الاجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا، كما يجب ألا ينظر إليه على أنه مجرد إضافة إلى الكتب الكثيرة التي بأيدينا والتي تدور حول "أصول علم الاجتماع" أو "أسس علم الاجتماع" أو حتى تلك التي يعتبرها أصحابها مجرد "مقدمة في علم الاجتماع" إذ على الرغم من أننا سنعرض بطبيعة الحال لبعض النظريات والآراء، فإننا نفعل ذلك بقصد إبراز المشكلات الهامة التي نود معالجتها وإلقاء الضوء عليها.
وسوف يجد القارئ أننا في محاولتنا لتقريب مفهوم البناء الاجتماعي والمفهومات الأخرى المتصلة به كمفهوم الثقافة والنظام، نعتمد دائمًا على الكتابات الأنثروبولوجية الاجتماعية من ناحية ونظريات علم الاجتماع "الكلاسيكي" وعلم الاجتماع الفرنسي بالذات من الناحية الأخرى.
وأخيرًا فسوف يرى القارئ، وبخاصة في الجزء الثاني من الكتاب، أننا نعتمد اعتمادًا كبيرًا على المعلومات التي أتيح لنا أن نجمعها من دراساتنا الحقلية في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا وبعض المجتمعات القبلية في أفريقيا جنوب الصحراء (يوغندة- كينيا- تنجانيقا- السودان الجنوبي- نيجيريا وسييراليون). بالإضافة طبعًا إلى المعلومات المستمدة من كتابات غيرنا من السوسيولوجيين والأنثروبولوجيين.
