تشكل دراسة الرئيسات جزءاً هاماً من الأنثروبولوجيا الفيزيقية التي تهتم بعقد المقارنات بين الإنسان وغيره من الحيوانات الثديية الشبيهة به أو الرئيسات غير البشرية للوقوف على أوجه الاختلاف أو الشبه من الناحية التشرحية وأيضاً تحديد أوجه التماثل أو التباين في السلوك.
وينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى بابين أثنين يتعلق أولهما بموضوع "الرئيسات" ويختص الثاني، بدراسة موضوع "التطور"، وقد قامت بكتابة الباب الأول السيدة الدكتورة/ هندومة محمد أنور ويشمل هذا الباب الفصول من الأول حتى الرابع من الكتاب. ويتناول الفصل الأول التعريف بالرئيسات وبداية ظهورها على الأرض وأهمية دراستها. أما الفصل الثاني فيعطى صورة مفصلة عن المجموعات التي تنقسم إليها رتبة الرئيسات، ويشرح الفصل الثالث الخصائص العامة للرئيسات ويعرض الفصل الرابع لموضوع السلوك العدوانى لدى الرئيسات وهو عبارة عن دراسة تطبيقية مقارنة للعدوان وأساليبه عند مختلف أنواع الرئيسات.
أما الباب الثاني من الكتاب فهو مخصص لدراسة موضوع التطور وقد كتبه السيد الدكتور مصطفى عوض إبراهيم ويشمل الفصول من الخامس حتى السابع. ويتناول الفصل الخامس التعريف بالتطور وتاريخ فكرة التطور والخلق الخاص والتطورالعضوى ومبادئ نظريات التطور والأساس الاجتماعي والاقتصادي للتطورية.
والفصل السادس يقدم الأدلة التي يستند إليها العلماء في تأكيد حدوث التطور، أما الفصل السابع والأخير فهو عرض لنظريات التطور.
