وبالعودة لأقسام الكتاب نجده قد قسم إلى عدة فصول، وكل فصل يتناول موضوعاً معيناً ولكنه بنفس الوقت يعتبر حلقة وصل تربط بين الفصل السابق والفصل اللاحق، لم يعتمد على التسلسل الزمني للأحداث التي وقعت على مسرح الفاجعة وذلك لأن هذا الكتاب ليس كتاباً يهتم بالدرجة الأولى بتسلسل الأحداث التاريخية لتفاصيل الفاجعة، وإنما هو كتاب يهتم بالدرجة الأولى بالناحية الإنسانية وبالآثار الاجتماعية والسياسية التي خلفتها وقائع تلك الملحمة الحسينية الدامية في نفوس المسلمين والمسيحيين، بل وحتى في نفوس الكثير من الذين لا يندرجون تحت هوية الإسلام أو المسيحية، كالمهاتما غاندي، على سبيل، أو غيره من اليهود والصابئة.
