هذا العمل محاولة تدخل في إطار المساهمة في الكشف عن ناحية من أهم نواحي التراث العربي الإسلامي في الجناح الغربي من العالم الإسلامي، وهو يهدف إلى توضيح، أن التصوف الفلسفي الإسلام، الذي نشأ وتطور ببلاد الأندلس، من حيث هو خطاب له خصوصياته، يتميز عن غيره من الخطابات الأخرى، فقهية كانت أو كلامية أو فلسفية، ويهدف إلى تبيان أنه يشارك في الثوابت الكبرى للتصوف العالمي، إلا أنه يتميز عنه بسمات أهمها اتخاذه منحى وحدة الوجود، منذ مرحلته الابتدائية الأولى. كما يهدف إلى الحفر عن الأسس النظرية لهذا التصوف، وإلى رصد التحولات التي طرأت على أفكاره ومفاهيمه، إلى أن بلغت مرحلة من النضج والإشعاع، مع التركيز في البحث على أهم المدارس الصوفية الفلسفية، التي نشطت في هذه المرحلة الهامة من تاريخ الفكر في الغرب الإسلامي، فضلاً عن إبراز الدور الذي لعبته اجتماعياً وثقافياً، مع الوقوف على ما يميز بعضها عن بعض من خصائص وما يربط بعضها ببعض من علاقات.
والأسئلة الكبرى الموجهة لهذا البحث يمكن طرحها هكذا: ما التصوف الفلسفي؟، ما الموضوعات التي شكلت حقل بحوثه النظرية؟، ما تاريخ تكون مفاهيمه بالأندلس؟، وما خصوصياته بصفته تصوراً بشرياً وجزءاً من فاعلية فكر الإنسان الأكثر إغراقاً في المثالية الروحية والحدسية الدينية الباطنية؟، ثم ما أهم المدارس الصوفية الفلسفية التي عرفتها بلاد الأندلس؟ وما خصوصيتها المميزة؟ وما العلاقات التي ربطت بعضها ببعض؟ وأخيراً ما المكانة التي احتلها أقطابها؟
