كتب يوربيدس قصتين عن حب فايدرا لابن زوجها هيبوليتوس ولكن في القصة الأولى باحت فايدرا بنفسها بحبها لهيبوليتوس ولكن هذا أساء إلى شعور الاثنين فغير بوربيديس القصة وجعل المربية هي التي تخبر خيبوليتوس بحب زوجة أبيه له.
ولكن في راسيني وفي سينكا باحت فايدرا بنفسها لهيبوليتوس بحبها له.
وفي الثلاث قصص اليونانية والفرنسية واللاتينية كانت مغلوبة على أمرها فلك يكن بإرادتها هذا الحب ولكن كانت ضحية للإلهة أفروديت التي كانت تريد الانتقام من هيبوليتوس لأنه كان يتكبر عليها ويبجل الإلهى أرتميس آلهة الصيد وكان يرفض الحب ويهرب منه.
وقد انتهت القصة بكارثة مروعة بطرق شتى نشأت باستجابة الإله بوسيدون للعنة التي صبها ثيبسيوس على ابنه هيبوليتوس.
أما راسني فقد تأثر في قصته بالوسط الذي كان يعيش فيه أعنى في بلاط لويس الرابع عشر وما كان يحاك فيه من قصص غرامية.
