إن الغرض الذى يرمى إليه المؤلف من عمله هذا هو أن يقدم للطالب والمعمار نماذج واضحة للعمارة العربية المستعملة فى مصر وأن يظهر حدود تناسب أجزائها المختلفة. وإذا لم يكن ثمة ما يدعو المعمار إلى التمسك بالتقاليد القديمة فإنه يتحتم عليه ألا يقدم على عمل تصميم بناية تتجلى فيها روح طراز معين قبل أن يلم تمام الإلمام بأصول تاريخ ذلك الطراز: نعم أن هناك قواعد عمومية للتناسب تشترك فيها جميع النماذج غير أن الحدود التقليدية للنسب التفصيلية لكل نموذج خاص لا يمكن غض النظر عنها. ومع أنه يجب أن تعود العين معرفة نسبة مخصوصة غير أنه لابد لهذا التعود من قياس يرجع إليه. ولا تصلح الأبنية التى لا رسم ولا أبعاد لها لأن تكون مقياسا مادام الشكل الناتج طبقاً لنسب معينة يختلف كذلك فى البناية الواحدة وفى الرسم الواحد. ولقد استثنى المؤلف عند تعيينه حدود النسب النماذج الشاذة التى تختلف مقاديرها اختلافا بينا عن مقادير النماذج الأخرى.
أما الغرض من هذا الكتاب فقاصر على بيان تركيب الأجزاء الأساسية للعمارة العربية بمصر فى القرنين الرابع عشر والخامس عشر. أما الزخارف العربية البارزة عن السطح أو الملونة أو المطعمة فلم يتعرض لها ومعظم الأشكال الواردة بهذا الكتاب ليست أمثلة مضبوطة لنماذج معينة بل هى صور تقريبية لنماذج متعددة.
