هذا الكتاب يتناول المرحلة الحبشية في تاريخ الفنان محمد ناجي وهي من أهم وأغنى مراحله الفنية وذلك حسب ما صرح به الفنان نفسه، وبإجماع كتاب الفن ونقاده، ويغطي هذا الكتاب تلك المرحلة والتي بدأت من فبراير1932 واستمرت لمدة عام كامل أمضاها في بلاد الحبشة تأثر خلالها بالطبيعة الجبلية البكر، وبعادات وتقاليد أهل تلك البلاد، وكانت مهمة محمد ناجي الأساسية، تصوير لوحة شخصية للإمبراطور هيلاسيلاسي، ويسرد الكتاب تفاصيل ما أحاط بظروف إنجازه لتلك المهمة، وقد اعتمد الكتاب إعتماداً رئيسياً على الرسائل والكتابات التي حررها ناجي بنفسه باللغة الفرنسية، وكذلك على مفكرة الجيب لعام 1932، التي كان يدور بها الكثير من الملاحظات، والكتابات المختصرة للتذكرة.
