أقدم هذا الكتاب على عرض نموذجين للتواجد الفلسفي في أدب نجيب محفوظ، تناول في النموذج الأول "فكرة التاريخ في أدب نجيب محفوظ" وهو بيان للنظريات الفلسفية التي تبناها نجيب محفوظ في أعماله التاريخية ابتداءً من "عبث الأقدار، إلى يوم قتل الزعيم"، وفي النموذج الثاني تناول عملاً روائياً واحداً هو "ليالي ألف ليلة (1979) باعتباره عملاً يعكس على نحو جيد واحدة من أهم نظريات الفلسفة الحديثة في الوجود والمعرفة على نحو يكاد يقطع بوجود هذه النظرية في صميم بناء العمل كله، خاصة وأن "ليال ألف ليلة" رواية من النوع الذي يسميه علماء الأدب والنقد باسم "التناص" أي: تركيب "نص" على "نص آخر" مع المغايرة في الدلالة المستهدفة.
فنجيب محفوظ ينسخ روايته على نسيج "ألف ليلة وليلة" المعروفة في الآداب الشعبية، ويعتمد على شخوصها المعرفة للكافة، لكنه يوظف النص الشعبي القديم توظيفاً فكرياً جديدا من خلال أشهر نظريات الفلسفة في العصر الحديث... نظرية الفيلسوف الألماني أيما نوبل كانط Kant (1724-1804) في نقد العقل والمعرفة والوجود.
تخرج أديبنا الكبير في قسم الفلسفة ثم تقلد في بعض الوظائف ذات الطابع الاجتماعي فتأتى لأديبنا خبرة عميقة بالشخصية الاجتماعية المصرية تجلت في تحليله الاجتماعي وبناء شخصيات رواياته.
والسؤال الذي طرح نفسه على مؤلفة الكتاب: أين الفلسفة في البناء الروائى عند نجيب محفوظ، فالفلسفة ليست من قبيل الدراسة التي يمكن للمرء أني تجاهلها في أنشطته الفكرية الأخرى ورؤيته للحياة.
وكانت الإجابة هذا الكتاب الذي يعد محاولة لرؤية أدب نجيب محفوظ يعين الفلسفة، وذلك لعمق هذا الأدب وأيضاً لاستجلاء دور الدراسة الفلسفية التي تلقاها في إبداعه الأدبي.
