كثيرون هم الذين كتبوا حول أدب نجيب محفوظ وتناولوه من زوايا مختلفة. ورغم اختلافهم حوله يبقى القول أن نجيب محفوظ قد بلغ أعلى مراتب القدرة الإبداعية وهو في عالمه الروائي الفذ نحى منحىً جديداً وأرسى مفهوماً جديداً للأدب القصصي ليس له نظير من قبل في عالمنا العربي. لقد تباينت أراء النقاد الذين تناولوا أدب نجيب محفوظ حتى بلغ الأمر حد الخصام عندما تجاهل البعض محفوظ في فترة من الفترات، وربما كان ذلك بمثابة إهدار متعمد لفترة مهمة من تاريخ الأدب العربي ومرحلة متوهجة من أدب نجيب محفوظ، كتب خلالها أحسن قصصه ورواياته.
ولقد سعى مؤلف هذا الكتاب د. سمير سرحان إلى طرح هذا الأمر بقليل من التفصيل فيما أطلق عليه الانقطاع والخصام النقدي. كما يبرز ذلك التفاوت والتباين بين رؤية النقاد أنفسهم لأدب نجيب محفوظ حيث سيلاحظ القارئ ذلك من خلال النماذج التي يطرحها في هذا الكتاب وهي دراسات تسجل ريادتها في اكتشافات جديدة لمي يسجلها النقد التقليدي من قبل، كما أن قسماً منها حاول أن يوسع من حدود الأطر المعروفة السابقة، ويطرح كل ذلك بوعي وفهم جديدين، كما تعكس النماذج المطروحة محاولات نافعة حاول أصحابها تطبيق معارف نظرية في مجال النقد التطبيقين كما هو الأمر مع بواكير النقد النفسي لدى الدكتور عز الدين إسماعيل، ومحاولات د. الرحاوي، ود. فرج أجمد. إن ما يجمع بين أصحاب الدراسات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب هو أنها ساهمت جميعها في كشف عالم رواية نجيب محفوظ وصاغت صورته لدى قرائه.
