كتب العرب والغرب كثيراً في أدب المذكرات والاعترافات مثل ابن بطوطة وابن فضلان ولكن العربي المسلم قلما يذكر تجاربه الفردية التي تغض قدرة الاجتماعي. وأكثرها تحمل الطابع الجغرافي والفكري والتاريخي ولكنه أكثر صدقاً من الغربيين الذين كتبوا عن الشرق في رحلاتهم التي تحشد بالمبالغات والخرافات والأساطير لإثارة العالم الغربي التي لا يحتاج إليها السائح المسلم. ولا سمكن للشرقي المسلم أن يجاري الغربي بصراحته وصدق تجاربه الفردية لأن المجتمع الشرقي تربطه أواصر وتقاليد ومثل متعددة ويكون محيطه وأسرته وأهله مسؤولين عن الأغلاط والأخطاء التي يرتكبها صاحب المذكرات.
وبالرغم من كون هذه المذكرات هي لرجل شرقي إلا أنها جاءت بأسلوب غربي في العرض والبيان، أما صاحب هذه المذكرات فهو رائد من رواد النهضة الفكرية الحديثة، ومؤرخ للأدب العربي الحديث في العراق فقد وضع أسس النقد الحديث وتاريخ الأدب فيه.
كتب عنه أكثر من سبعة كتب أربعة باللغة العربية وثلاثة باللغة الفرنسية والإنكليزية والبولونية إنه يوسف عز الدين، أما مذكراته هذه فهي عبارة عن اعترافات صادقة تحدث فيها وبقلمه عن سيرته الذاتية كاملة، وتحديداً الفترة التي درس فيها بالخارج بلندن، فتوقف عند أهم المراحل التي صقلت سيرته، وشخصيته، وسجل أجمل الطرائف وأحلى الغرائب التي مرت معه في حياته في أوروبا.
