للصراع بين الشرق والغرب قصّة تعود إلى أعماق التاريخ وتسير معه إلى يومنا هذا، ففي الوقت الذي حاولت فيه بعض الموجات الشرقية أن تغتصب البلاد الغربية، نجد أن موجات العسكر والتبشير الغربية قد هيمنت في أوقات متباينة على البلاد الشرقية، بدءاً بشرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط وشمال أفريقيا، وإنتهاء بالهند والصين.
لقد حاول الفينيقيون الهيمنة على إسبانيا وبريطانيا وشمال غرب وشمال البحر المتوسط، كما استطاع المسلمون أن ينشروا الحضارة الإسلامية في ربوع إسبانيا على مدى سبعة قرون، ووصلوا إلى ما سمي فيما بعد بالأمريكيتين.
وبالمقابل فإن ما نشره أو فرضه القادم من الغرب لم يكن دائماً متفقاً مع الإنسانية والإدعاءات التي تنادي بالتحضر والتقدم.
ولقد كتب هذا الرحالة عدداً من الكتب، من بينها: سوريا والبلاد المقدسة، كما كتب عن الأمثلة العربية، وعن رحلاته في بلاد العرب (الحجاز والجزيرة العربية) وبلاد النوبة ومصر، وقد قام المترجم (شخصياً) بتصوير الكتابين المتعلقين بالأمثلة، ورحلاته عن بلاد العرب والنوبة من مكتبة جامعة كمبردج على أمل أن تتاح لنا فرصة ترجمتها إلى العربية بعون الله سبحانه.
ومن كتب المؤلف، هذا الكتاب الذي ترجمته بجزئيه وهو: ملحوظات عن البدو والوهابيين، وقد أتيحت لي قراءة كتابه، رحلات في سوريا والبلاد المقدسة، بالعربية مختصراً - ترجمة عبد الله عرفات، وبالإنجليزية حيث توجد في المكتبة الكبيرة في جامعة كمبردج، وصورتها عن نسخة في المركز البريطاني بعمان وقد وجدت أن الترجمة إلى العربية (عبد الله عرفات) ليست بالمستوى العلمي المطلوب، كما كانت خالية من الهوامش الضرورية.
أما النسخة الإنجليزية، فقد هالني منها ما بها من ملحقات، تنم عن عقلية ومهمة إستخبارية مذهلة للرحالة بيركهارت، وقد كتبها بإتقان زائد، فهو يهتم بالطرق، ومراحل طريق الحاج، وآبار المياه، وأفضل السبل للوصول إلى القرى والمدن، وبلاد الحجاز، وما إلى ذلك.
