مؤلف هذا الكتاب الإمام محسن الأمين هو رقم بارز من أرقام المجد على مفرق التاريخ الحضاري لجبل عامل، وآثاره تمثل موسوعة حضارية وفكرية تستوعب كل الجوانب التي تهم الباحث والمؤرخ والفقيه والفيلسوف والمتكلم والجغرافي وكتاب "أعيان الشيعة" مثل حي على ذلك. فأعيان الشيعة، لم يؤرخ لأعيان طائفة إسلامية بعينها أكثر من كونه دائرة معارف كبرى للتاريخ الإسلامي تستغرق مئات الشخصيات على امتداد مئات السنين.
فمنهجية المؤلف أتاحت المجال لهذا كله. فعلى الرغم من اقتصاره على تراجم الشيعة الأمامية الاثني عشرية إلا أنه ذكر جميع من ذكرهم الطوسي من رجاله من الصحابة وأن لم يكونوا من شرط كتابه حتى لا يفوته أحد ممن ذكره غيره من المؤلفين. وهو يتحدى الحقيقة ما أمكن متجنساً ما لا يلائم ذوق المطالعين وقد جاءت الأسماء مرتبة على حروف المعجم بحسب الحرف الأول والثاني وما بعده وبحسب أسماء الآباء والأجداد والألقاب والأوصاف. ذاكراً تاريخ الولادة ثم الوفاة ثم أقوال العلماء في المترجم أو ما يريد المؤلف أن يصفه به ثم سيرته ثم أحواله ما ذكره المترجمون منهما ثم ما يدل على تشيعه ان كان غير معروف التشيع ثم مؤلفاته ثم شعره ونثره هذا في التراجم المطولة التي تجمع هذه الأمور أو بعضها دون المحتضرة.
وقد عمد إلى عدم التوقف عن الإطالة بذكر قدر كاف من شعر المترجم له إذا كان غير مجموع أو غير مطبوع ولا منشور وكذلك من تقضني الحال الاطالة في ترجمته بنقل شيء من آثاره من نثر أو احتجاج أو شيء ذكره في مؤلفاته مما يناسب نقله وإن طالت الترجمة، لأن التاريخ والتراجم يناسبهما التطويل أكثر من الاختصار. وقد عمد المؤلف أيضاً إلى بيان محاكمة أو استنباط أمور من مجرى للحوادث في الترجمة التي تقتضي الحال ذلك وقد استهل الكتاب في الكلام على معنى الشيعة وتاريخ ظهور الشيعة وفرقها.
