ويعايش القارئ محاولات شتيفان لجعل الدار ومحيطها قابلة للسكَّنى، وتعرَّفه على الناس في القرية وزياراته لهاينريش الذي يتوقع قدوم ابنة أخته سلينا من ألمانيا، وما يتطور في سياق الرواية ببطء هي موضوعات الكاتب جان باول: الحب والموت والخلود.
إن فالتر كباخر لا "يلقي محاضرة عن روح العصر"؛ ولكن وراء عَرَضيّة سرده الظاهرية تكمن جدية عميقة، إنه يدفع القارئ بلا هوادة إلى التفكير، ويسود نصوصه هدوء نسمع فيه نبضات قلبنا.
