على امتداد التسعينيات لم تتوقف الدراسات التي كتبها العرب والأجانب عن نجيب محفوظ، وهي الدراسات التي كانت تتفاوت عمقاً وشمولاً وتخصيصاً بين البحوث الجامعية والكتب العامة والمقالات الصحفية، وكان أهم ما يلفت النظر في هذه جميعا هو التحول في النظرة العالمية إلى أديبنا الكبير، إذ لم يهد مجرد كاتب عربي متميز عميق الصلة بمجتمعه وقضاياه وتحولاته، بل أصبح ينظر إليه باعتباره من أعمدة الأدب الإنساني على جميع مستوياته في أي مكان في العالم. والكتابات التي تتناوله تتفاوت أيضاً، في ربطه بمصر والعالم العربي وأحداثه، بين اعتباره رمزاً للتحرر والتنوير والفكر الأصيل، وبين دراسته باعتباره أديباً أجاد طرائق فنه وتطور فشق لنفسه أكثر من سبيل فنى وسلك أكثر من منهج أدبي، إذ لم يعد الروائي الذي ينسج على منوال غيره من أعلام الرواية في العالم، بل غدا روائياُ وقصاصاً يتميز بطرائقه وأساليبه المتنوعة المتميزة المتفردة، بحيث وجدنا من الدارسين في الغرب من يعقد مقارنات صادقة بينه وبين عمالقة القرن العشرين في العالم فلا يغمطه حقه من التميز والتفرد والنبوغ.
في هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي بين يدينا والذي هو الجزء الثاني بعد كتاب كان قد صدر تحت عنوان "وجهات نظر حصرية" وتضمن مجموعة مقالات أبدعها النقاد المصريون في ترجمة إنجليزية رفيعة مع ببليوجرافيا موجزة عما كتب عن نجيب محفوظ في الشرق والغرب. وبالتالي يحتوي هذا الكتاب على كم من المقالات والدراسات التي تقدم صورة وافية عن أدب نجيب محفوظ والتيارات النقدية الأدبية التي تناولها، كما وفيه مقدمة جاءت بالإنجليزية درست تطور لغة نجيب محفوظ ومشكلات المترجم الذي قد لا يكون داعياً لهذا التطور.
