إن المقارنة المعقلنة للأديان بعد ضروري في فهم الحضارات الكبرى التي امتزج تاريخها بتاريخ أديانها، باعتبار هذه الأديان وقائع حضارية ساهمت في هيكلة العقليات لفترات طويلة وما زال أثرها سارياً في الحياة الاجتماعية العامة وآليات التفكير العميقة. والمقاربة المعقلنة لا تتنافى ودراسة كل الظواهر ومنها ما لا يبدو عقلانياً، أو أنه بالأحرى يخضع لعقلانية غير تلك التي تقوم عليها المعرفة العلمية. فالمجتمعات لا تتطور بمقتضيات العقل المنطقي بل عكس ذلك هو الغالب. كما أن العديد من القضايا الراهنة لا تفهم إلا من خلال امتداداتها البعيدة في التاريخ، وعلاقاتها بعصور سابقة كانت اللغة الدينية فيها لغة التعبير عن حاجات الإنسان وتطلعاته، وكانت عميقة الغور في كل ما ينتجه البشر من معارف أو يقدمون عليه من أعمال. وحيث ما أردنا أن نسبر أعماق الذاكرة الجماعية اصطدمنا بالعامل الديني مكوناً تاريخياً من مكوناتها.
كان المهم من وجهة نظرنا تقريب نصوص الأديان العالمية إلى عموم القراء وتقديم نصوص مقتبسة من تقاليد دينية مختلفة تجمع بينها وحدة الموضوع وتطرح جميعاً رؤى متعددة للأخلاق، بل هي رؤى متعددة للحقيقة الإنسانية من خلال القضية الأخلاقية. وأملنا أن تتطور الدراسات الحديثة المقارنة لأديان والحضارات في مجتمعاتنا العربية وينفتح الفكر العربي على المجادلات الفلسفية الحديثة في المسألتين الأخلاقية والدينية.
