يُعتبر كتاب الموطأ أول كتاب حديث وصل إلينا كاملاً على أبواب العلم، حيث يُعد من أجمل الكتب التي أُلفت في عصر الإمام مالك وأعمقها نفعاً وفيه قال القاضي أبو بكر إبن العربي في شرح الترمذي: الموطأ هو الأصل واللُباب، وكتاب البخاري هو الأصل الثاني في هذا الباب وعليهما بنى الجميع كمسلم والترمذي.
عدد أحادث الموطأ: ذكر إبن الهباب: أن مالكاً روى مائية ألف حديث، جمع منها في الموطأ عشرة آلاف، ثم لم يزل يعرضها على الكتاب والسنة ويختبرها بالآثار والأخبار، حتى رجعت إلى خمسمائة.
ومن عظيم شأن الموطأ ما قاله العسقلاني عن رسول الله (ص): قال: "يا ابن السري، إني قد أوعزت إلى مالك بن أنس بكنز يغرقه عليكم ألا وهو: الموطأ، ألا وليس بعد كتاب الله – عز وجل – ولا سنتي في إجماع المسلمين حديث أصح من الموطأ، فاسمعه تنتفع به".
هذا وقد جمع المصنف في هذا العمل ما صح من حديث وتفسير وتاريخ، وذكر أقوال الصحابة والتابعين والأئمة قبله في الموطأ.
