عرفت هذا الدرس منذ زمان طويل، فقد رجعت فيه إلى طائفة مما صنع أولو هذا العلم الشريف إبتداء من القرن الثاني الهجري إلى القرون المتأخرة، وقد دأب أولئك الأعلام على إضافة شيء لم يكن للمتقدمين أن أدركوه.
وقد انتهيت من هذا الدرس بوقفة طويلة على كتاب الإمام مجد الدين أبي السعادات المبارك بن محمد الجَزَري الشهير بــ "ابن الأثير"، وقد أسماه "النهاية في غريب الحديث الأثر".
لقد أبرَّ هذا الإمام على من سبقه ممن صنف في "غريب الحديث"، لقد أفدت مما أوعبه ابن الأثير في كتابه فوائد جمة حفزتني إلى أن أشارك في هذا الدرس الجاد.
وإني إن قلت: ما تَرَك الأوّل للآخر، لا أذهب إلى النيل مما قدَم أولئك الثقات الأفذاد الذين ساروا على المحجة البيضاء، ففازوا فوزاً عظيماً، لقد كان لي أن اخترت من معجم ابن الأثير طائفة من الكلم النوابغ مما نطق بها الرسول الكريم، فإنْ وفِّقت لشيء أصبو إليه فتلك نعمة من نعم الله تعالى عليّ وإن أفز بهذه الرغبة فعذري أني اجتهدت وقد أصيب وقد أخطئ، وقد قال صلوات الله وسلامه عليه: "كل ابن آدم خطّاء".
