عمل المؤلف جون دانيالز John Daniels في منطقة الشرق الأوسط لمدة خمس وعشرين سنة، بعد تركه الخدمة العسكرية في مشاة البحرية الملكية البريطانية، اتجه إلى العمل الدبلوماسي في الخارجية البريطانية، حيث عمل عام 1946 في البعثة الدبلوماسية البريطانية في كل من إيران ومصر، وما لبث أن ترك العمل في السلك الدبلوماسي واتجه للعمل في شركات النفط.
وقد عمل المؤلف منذ سنة 1948 ولمدة خمس عشر سنة في الشؤون المالية والعلاقات الحكومية في القطاع النفطي الكويتي، وكان شاهد عصر على تطور هذا القطاع.
وعليه، عاصر الكاتب فترة التطور السياسي والإقتصادي والإجتماعي المذهل في الكويت في الفترة من أواخر الأربعينيات إلى أوائل السبعينيات من القرن المنصرم، فكان شاهد عصر على هذا التطور، يصف دانيالز رحلة الكويت في سنوات التكوين الأولى للدولة حيث تحولت من العزلة إلى الإنفتاح على العالم الخارجي، وشاهد بعينيه التحول السريع للكويت من منطقة صحراوية قاحلة ووجود ميناء صغير يعتمد على الغوص على اللؤلؤ والتجارة البدائية إلى دولة الرخاء والإزدهار سياسياً وإقتصادياً وإجتماعياً.
هذا الكتاب يزخر بالمعلومات الغنية والمفيدة عن التطور التاريخي لدولة الكويت: حيثُ تحدث عن الدستور والديمقراطية ونظام الحكم والمشكلات السياسية، وأزمة عبد الكريم قاسم، كما يتناول أيضاً دور القطاع النفطي الفعّال، ودور الصندوق الكويتي للتنمية الإقتصادية العربية، ثم يعرج بتسليطه الأضواء على تطور الخدمات التعليمية والصحية، والتغير الإجتماعي الذي أحدثه النفط.
والجدير بالذكر، هو تميز الكاتب بالحيادية خلال تناوله لمراحل تطور الكويت في هذا الكتاب.
