إن الكتاب الحالي، كما ينبغي أن يكون واضحاً من الدلائل المارة الذكر، هو نتيجة اهتمامي الشديد بالعرب ومعالمهم طوال حياتي، فهو يبين بعض الأمور التي تعلمتها من خلال التكلم مع العرب عبر السنين العديدة، وبشكل رسمي في معظم الحالات، وبصورة غير منتظمة في المقابلات الرسمية أيضاً، ومن خلال ملاحظاتهم واستيعاب التفاصيل القليلة العديدة لسلوكهم ومواقفهم وتاعبيرهم وحركاتهم والكلمات التي ينطقونها، وحتى أنني في بعض الأحيان، أكون مذنباً بسبب استراق السمع غير المخطط له، كما كان يحدث خلال إقامتي المؤقتة في مدينة القدس القديمة حيث كانت نافذتي تطل على ساحة مسجد صغير، وقد وجدت نفسي أحياناً الشاهد اللا إرادي لإجتماعات المصلين الصغيرة من العرب والذين يبقى أغلبهم بعد الصلاة، ليشربوا الشاي ويتحدثوا بأصوات عالية متحمسة تعبر عن خصائصهم.
ولا حاجة إلى التأكيد بأن كتاباً مثل هذا الكتاب، ولا يمكن كتابته على أساس الملاحظات الشخصية فقط، وإن قراءة ما كتبه الأخرون عن العرب، كان واحداً من الأمور التي شغلتني باستمرار خلال السنين التي قضيتها في القدس، فضلاً عن الفترة التي تلتها.
