"كلمة العرب" عندما بحثنا عن هذه الكلمة ومدلولها اللغوي فإننا لا نجد لها جوابًا شافيًا عند علماء اللغة الذي كان خلاصة قولهم بشأنها إن الناس اختلفوا فيها وفي تسمية العرب وسبب تسميتهم عربًا.. أول من أنطق الله لسانه بلغة العرب وهو (يعرب بن قحطان) وهو أبو اليمن كما يدعون وهو العرب العاربة أما ولد إسماعيل (ع) فهم العرب المستعربة وفي رأي آخر إن ولد إسماعيل نشأوا في عربه وهي تهامة وهناك رواية عن النبي "صلى الله عليه وسلم" أنه قال خمسة أنبياء من العرب محمد وإسماعيل وشعيب وصالح وهود (صلوات الله عليهم أجمعين) ومن خلال هذا الحديث المروي عن الرسول "صلى الله عليه وسلم" عن الأنبياء بأن نسلهم واحد وهو اللغة العربية إضافة إلى أنهم جميعًا يسكنون بلاد العرب وكل من سكن في هذه البلاد وتكلم بلسان أهلها فهم عرب معدهم ويمنهم أما الزهري في لسان العرب فيقول الأقرب عندي أنهم سموا عربًا باسم بلدهم العربات.
وقد أصبح من المتعذر على أي باحث في هذا الصدد أن يجزم بتعيين وقت استعمال العرب أنفسهم لهذه الكلمة، هذا وقد ورد عن المؤرخين بأن اللغة العربية هي إحدى اللغات السامية وكما ذكرنا سابقًا حيث اختلفت ألسنتهم بعدما كثر عددهم واختلطوا مع الأقوام الأخرى ومع مرور الزمن أصبحت لهم لغات مستقلة عن الأخرى فاللغة العربية كما ترد في كتابات الباحثين تنقسم إلى لغة الشمال ولغة الجنوب.
وهذا كتاب القصد والأمم لمؤلفه الشيخ أبي عمر شرح فيه هذه التداعيات ودوافع وما وقع فيه النسابون وعلماء النسب في تلك الحقبة الزمنية التي جاءت في العصور السالفة حيث صحح فيها خلط بعض الأنساب بالأسماء والمسميات التي رافقت ذلك التاريخ إذ نقدم للباحث العربي هذه المعلومات من أجل الاستفادة فيها لتعزيز معرفته بالنسب وكتابة الأنساب.
