CHEKRI GANEM (1961- 1929), Journaliste, essayiste, poète et dramaturge, fut un militant de la première heure du Liban indépendant comme de la cause arab. II vécut dans l’exil la majeure partie de sa vie, tournée depuis sa prime jeunesse vers la lute pour l’émancipation de sa patrie de l’emprise ottomane.
Vice- président du premier Congrès arabe, réuni à Paris en juin 1913, il fut un inlassable propandiste de l’idée libanaise en même temps que de l’œuvre française au Levant.
“Grand commis de la France”, il reste, par ses études et ses articles, repris dans le premier volume de cet ouvrage, l’un des penseurs majeurs de la libanité, une libanité qui cependant, devait, selon lui, s’épanouir dans un cadre arabe, cultural autant que national.
Mais, au côté de cette abondante œuvre politique Chekri Ganem était aussi un écrivain inspiré qui peut être tenu pour le père de la littérature libanaise d’expression française. S’attachant à refléter cet Orient des legends et des poètes don’t il était le fils éloigné, il fut un auteur dramatique fêté par le public comme par la critique.
Ses pieces, réunies dans le second volume de ces œuvres complètes, furent jouées sur les scènes françaises les plus prestigieuses, notamment Antar, produite à l’Odéon en 1910 avant de devenir un opera de Gabriel Dupont.
Salué par la critiuqe pour sa qualité littéraire, plus tard pour la musique qui l’accompagnait, Antar devait acquérir une valeur de symbole de l’intérêt que portait une certaine génération françophone aux Letters arabes et à leurs héros.
