ومن هناك بدأت تخوض غمار الكثير من الأحداث، فتناولتها تحرّكات القشرة الأرضية، وتتابعت عليها أجيال من متعدّدات الخلايا، وتشكّل فيها الوقود العضوي، وتناوبت عليها العصور الجليدية، وضربتها الزلازل وأثرت فيها النيازك، بل إن أفعال البشر وقنابلهم النووية تركت أثرها عليها.
والكتاب في كل ذلك يجمع علوماً شتّى يبني عليها ذلك التاريخ الطويل للأرض: من فيزياء الفلك، إلى حركة الصفائح، وعلوم المعادن، ودراسة المحيطات، وتحليل الأحافير - وهو الموضوع الذي استغرق الكثير من صفحاته - وعلوم أخرى متفرّعة عن تلك العلوم.
ويمضي الكتاب إلى ما هو أبعد من دراسة التاريخ الماضي، فيحاول التنبؤ بمستقبل هذا الكوكب الجميل، وما ستؤول إليه صخوره وذرّاته عندما تذرى في فضاء الكون الفسيح.
