تناول أكثر المؤرخين المعنيين بتاريخ الإسلام -من مسلمين وغير مسلمين- واقعة الطف ومقتل الحسين بن علي عليه السلام بالتدوين في كتبهم التأريخية العامة أو في كتب خاصة اختصت بفاجعة الطف. واختلفت أساليبهم في التدوين حسب أذواقهم في سرد الوقائع والأحداث: فمن محدث ذكر الوقائع بأسانيد معنعنة إلى ناقليها عن مشاهدة ورأي عين، ومن سارد نسق الأحداث تنسيقاً زمنياً أو ما شاكل ذلك، ومن محلل يدرس المقدمات والنتائج ويستخرج الأسباب التي دعت للنهضة وما نتج عنها، ومن قصصي مزج الواقع بالخيال وأطلق العنان لريشته لكي يرسم صورة يزعم أنها حقيقة صورها بأجلى الصور.
ومن الطبيعي أن تختلف مراتب هؤلاء المؤرخين في الدقة والعناية بما ينقلونه من الوقائع أو عدم الاكتراث وتحري الصادق منها عن الدخيل: فترى بعضهم في منتهى الإحتياط والتحفظ في النقل يتحرى الواقع ويتجنب الكذب والمبالغة وبعضهم تدفعه الصبية العمياء إلى إنكار بعض الحقائق أو قلبها حسب هواه، وبعضهم بدافع الحب والولاء يبالغ فيما ينقل مبالغات شنيعة يسود بذلك وجه التأريخ.
والمؤرخ الأمين الناقد هو الذي يروي فيما يكتب ويتمهل حتى لا تزل به هذه الزحمة من الحقائق إلى مهوى الإنحياز لغير الحق واختيار الباطل فيما يكتب وينقل.
ومن الكتب الممتازة حول مقتل الإمام الحسين، كتاب "نفس المهموم في مقتل الحسين المظلوم" الذي ألفه "عباس القمي". إذ جمع بين الدقة في الرواية والتحفظ في النقل والذوق في التنسيق والجمال في الأسلوب. لم يكتف المحدث القمي في كتابه هذا بكتابة الأحداث وجمعها كيفما اتفق، بل قارن بين رواياتها -بل بين نسخها في مواضع مهمة- وعرض بعضها على بعض ليميز الصحيح منها عن المشكوك ويستخلص الحق الذي يمكن الركون إليه.
تتبع المصادر التأريخية المهمة كمقتل أبي مخنف وتاريخ الطبري والكامل لابن الأثير وأضرابها، كما استقصى المراجع التأريخية المتأخرة كناسخ التواريخ والقمقام لفرهاد ميرزا وأمثالهما. كل ذلك لكي لا يشذ عنه دقيقة تأريخية أو تحقيق يليق بالدرس والنقل.
ومما يمتاز به المحدث القمي في كتابه هذا وسائر مؤلفاته أنه موضوعي لا تغلبه عواطفه ولا ينحاز إلى ميوله الخاصة، بل رائدة الحق والصدق بلا مبالغة في القول أو تسرع في إعطاء الرأي. وميزة أخرى لهذا الكتاب التعاليق التوضيحية التي علقها المؤلف والشروح المناسبة التي أضافها في الهوامش، وهي تجلي كثيراً من نقاط الغموض وتجيب على أسئلة ربما تعرض لبعض القارئين.
