الكتاب شرح (متممة الأجرومية) للشيخ العلامة محمد بن محمد الرعيني الشهير بالخطاب، يتضمن شرحاً كافلاً بحل المعاني وتصحيح المباني، ينتفع به المبتدئ ولا يستغني عنه المنتهي، وقد أتبعه مؤلفه بكثير من الفوائد لذلك جاءت تسميته "الكواكب الدرية شرح متممة الأجرومية". افتتح المؤلف كتابه بـ (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) أو شرحها ثم أتبعها بـ (الحمد لله)، إلى آخر ألفاظ ومعاني القرآن الكريم، وقدم له بمقدمة ومما جاء فيها: "لما كان الكتاب الموسوم بالكواكب الدرية شرح متممة الإجرومية حاوياً ما فيه الكفاية من قواعد النحو والإعراب بحثت في متفرقات الكتب النحوية عن إعراب ما لم يعرب من تلك الشواهد متداولاً بين أفاضل العلماء والطلاب متضمناً ما فيه الكفاية من قواعد النحو والإعراب بحثت في متفرقات الكتب النحوية عن إعراب ما لم يعرب من تلك الشواهد لكي يكون تناولها على طلاب علم العربية أسهل وأقرب .. كما استعنت في متفرقات الأسفار ... وما أغربه الشارح نقلته مع ما تضمن من اللغة والمعنى برمته وقد اختصرته في بعض المواضع، وإنما دعاني إلى إثباته في البحث لكي يستجمع إعراب جميع الشواهد ...". وبكلام آخر هو شرح في معاني وألفاظ وإعراب شواهد القرآن الكريم، توزع على أبواب وهي:
1- باب الإعراب والبناء، 2- باب معرفة علامات الإعراب، 3- باب النكرة والمعرفة، 4- باب المرفوعات من الأسماء، 5- باب الفاعل، 6- باب المفعول الذي لم يسم فاعله، 7- باب المبتدأ والخبر (...) ، 8- باب الوقف، (...) وأبواب أخرى ذات صلة.
