إن هذا الكتاب هو واحد من سلسلة الكتب التي صدرت كدراسة عن الحرب العالمية الثانية-تلك الحرب التي شبت أوارها في سبتمبر 1939 ولم تضع أوزارها إلا في ما يوسنه 1945 بالنسبة لأوروبا وفي تاريخ لاحق بالنسبة للحرب ضد اليابان، وقد تناولت هذه السلسلة ثلاث شعب في دراسة الحرب العالمية الثانية الشعبة الأول تتناول المعارك الشهيرة. والشعبة الثانية تتناول الحملات. وقد تشمل الحملة عدة معارك منفصلة أو متصلة وبذلك فهي تمتد لفترات أطول وهي عادة تقرر المصير للحرب في ميدان من الميادين.
أما الشعبة الثالثة من هذه السلسلة فهي تتناول الأسلحة التي استخدمت في الحرب-سواء كان السلام نوعاً مفرداً مثل الطائرة أو المدفع أو الدبابة. أما كان السلام تشكيلاً معيناً يستخدم في الحرب مقل الفرق المدرعة أو المدفعية أو المشاة أو رجال المظلات. وهذا الكتاب الذي نحن بصدده هو من كتب الأسلحة فهو يتناول سلاح المدرعات وكيف نشأ وكيف تطور. كما يشرح فكرة استخدام الدبابات في الحرب وكيف نبتت وفي الحقيقة فإنه يتناول بالذات سلاح المدرعات في الجيش الألماني وقد أثبتت المعارك التي خاضتها القوات الألمانية المدرعة متعاونة مع سلاح الطيران.
كما ويروي الكتاب قصة نشأة فرق البانزر الألمانية وكيف احتلت مكانها في خطط هتلر الكبرى وكيف استطاع أعداؤهم في النهاية أن يقفوا في وجههم، وزيادة على ذلك فإن هذا الكتاب هو قصة إلهام كبير في ميدان الفن العسكري ومؤلف الكتاب "كيث ماكس" هو صاحب كتاب "الفيلق الأفريقي" أحد الكتب السابقة في هذه السلسلة، وهو الشخص المفرد المؤهل لكتابة هذا الكتاب-فقد خدم إلى وقت قريب في سلاح الدبابات الملكي البريطاني وكتب كثيراً عن الحرب المدرعة بما في ذلك تاريخ الآلات الذي قدم فيه.
