هذا الكتاب أكمل وأشمل مؤلف وُضع للتعريف بعلم النفس الحديث أي تعريف الإنسان بذاته، ويستمد أهميته من ثلاث نقاط: أولاها أن كشوف فرويد نقطة إنطلاق لإنتصارات علم النفس الحديث، ولكن المؤلف يتجاوزها بمقدار ما تسمح به الكشوف الأحدث وممارسته السيكولوجية الغنية؛ وثانيتها أنه يوفّر للقارئ المتخصّص وغير المتخصص خلاصة وافية من الإنجازات التي حقّقها علم النفس الحديث، والثالثة أنه يستخلص ما يترتب على هذه الإنجازات من نتائج علمية.
كل ذلك بأسلوب يجمع بين الوضوح في العرض والعلمية الأشد صرامة، إذ يضع المؤلف قارئ هذا الكتاب بأيسر السبل وأقربها منالاً أمام الجذور الأولى لكل معرفة للنفس ولكل عمل إصلاحي أو ترميمي لها.
ويجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب متعتين: الأولى معرفة ذاته في زواياها الخفية أو اللغزية؛ والثانية توجيهه نحو ما يجب عليه أن يفعل ليتجنّب الإلتواءات النفسية خلال هذا العصر الذي يذبل فيه الفرد، عصر التكنولوجيا والإعلام والمدن المكتظّة... وبالتالي عصر التلوّث النفسي، الأشد وطأة على الإنسان من تلوث البيئة.
