ولكن قبل هذا كله عاش العالم في نظام ثنائي القطبية يحكمه معسكران سوفيتي شرقي وأمريكي غربي امتد الصراع بينهما لعقود متمثلة في حروب ونزاعات وتوترات عسكرية وسياسية وصلت لحد التهديد بحرب نووية.
