يستعرض المؤلفان الفرضيات التي قدمتها بعض مناهج السوسيولوجيا الحديثة في المسائل الثقافية، عن طريق تقويم أعمال علماء الإجتماع الكلاسيكيين وأعمال "مدرسة فرانكفورت"، التي تُعتبر من أوائل المحاولات المُنظمة في مجال سوسيولوجيا الثقافة في أواسط القرن العشرين، وبعض رموزها البارزين: يورغن هابرماس وهربرت ماركوزه وثيودور أدورنو وماكس هوركهايمر وفالتر بنيامن وإريك فروم، ثم يناقش أفكار المُتخصصين بالبنيوية حول الدراسات السيميائية.
