مر تاريخ الشرق الأقصى في مراحل مختلفة ومتتالية نتيجة لتطور العوامل المختلفة التي تؤثر فيه، سواء كانت عوامل داخلية أو قوى ضغط خارجية. ولقد ظلت معرفة العالم بالشرق الأقصى وشؤونه بسيطة، حيث كان طريق الاتصال بالشرق الأقصى في ذلك الوقت هو طريق الحرير الذي يمر في وسط آسيا ويصل إلى الصين، وكذلك الطريق البحري الذي يصل بين الهند وسومطره ومنها إلى البحر المتوسط وأوروبا عبر ما يسمى بطريق التوابل.
إن هذا الكتاب يعد محاولة لمعالجة المشكلات الدولية حيث يغطي مرحلة ضغط النفوذ الأجنبي على الشرق الأقصى رغم انغلاقه، الأمر الذي أدى إلى انفتاح كل من الصين واليابان والهند الصينية أمام النفوذ الأجنبي، كما يغطي أيضاً مرحلة نحو اليابان وتوسعها.
يقع الكتاب في قسمين وخمسة أبواب، القسم الأول: ضغط النفوذ الأجنبي، وفيه الباب الأول، انفتاح الشرق الأقصى (1840-1868) ويعرض لبيئة الشرق الأقصى في عام 1840 وأحوال كل من الصين واليابان، والهند الصينية وانفتاح الصين، كما يعرض لانفتاح اليابان، والهند الصينية. أما الباب الثاني فيبحث في توغل النفوذ الغربي (1868-1894) ويتطرق إلى تطور اليابان وركود الصين، والعلاقات بين دول الشرق الأقصى والدول العظمى، ومصالح الدول العظمى في عام 1894. وفي الباب الثالث يعرض المؤلف لأزمة الصين 1894-1901، والصدام الصيني الياباني (1894-1895)، وعلاقة الدول العظمى الأوروبية واليابان (1895-1899)، وعلاقة الصين بالدول العظمى، ويقسم المحيط الهادي ورد فعل الصين على ذلك. أما القسم الثاني من الكتاب فهو مخصص لنمو اليابان وتوسعها، وفيه: الباب الرابع، الانتصار الياباني الأول، والعداء الروسي الياباني وحرب منشوريا وانتصار اليابان وموقف الدول العظمى، وثورة الصين. وفي الباب الخامس، يعرض المؤلف للشرق الأقصى أثناء الحرب العالمية الأولى، وأوضاع الشرق الأقصى عند إعلان الحرب العالمية، والتوسع الياباني من 1914 إلى 1918. وضربة التوقف، للتوسع الياباني.
