يعد كتاب الألفين في إمامة أمير المؤمنين لمؤلفه الإمام الحلي المتوفى سنة 726 هـ، بمثابة بحث وافٍ في الإمامة وضعه مؤلفه بأدلة كافيةٍ لم يسبقه غيره عليها من علماء الشيعة. وقد ذكر فيه ألف وثمان وثلاثون دليلاً في إمامة الإمام علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه. وهو نفسه الكتاب الموسوم بـ (كتاب الألفين) الفارق بين الصدق والمين، وقد أورد فيه العلامة الحلي كما قال رحمه الله: "من الأدلة اليقينية والبراهين العقلية والنقلية ألف دليل على إمامة سيد الوصيين علي بن أبي طالب أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام. وألف دليل على إبطال شبه الطاعنين، وأوردت فيه من الأدلة على باقي الأئمة عليهم السلام ما فيه كفاية للمسترشدين...".
وفي هذا السياق يعتمد صاحب الألفين في أدلته على القرآن الكريم فيورد أيَ من الذكر الحكيم وينسبها أو يفسرها على أنها جاءت كدليل على إمامة علي رضي الله عنه منها قوله تعالى: "والله ولي المؤمنين" فيقول: القصد الذاتي من الولي عمل المصالح وقصد منافع المولى وفعلها وكل مصلحة ومنفعة للمكلفين فهي في جنب المعصوم مستحقرة لما تقدم فيجب عليه تعالى من حيث هذه الآية ولزوم هذا الحكم نصب الإمام". وعلى هذا الدرب يسير المؤلف في شرحه لكل آية يتصل معناها بمفهوم الإمامة وفقاً لعقائد الإمامية، وللقارئ المسلم الحكم في نهاية الأمر.
