هذه الرواية، عمل إبداعي مناهض للعبودية، تحتفي فيه كاتبة إنجليزية ببطل أفريقي أسود، يثور على الهيمنة الأوروبية على مقدرات شعوب العالم، ومناهض للفكر العنصري.
تُرجمت إلى الفرنسية واعتبرها النقّاد الفرنسيون أهم رواية مناهضة للعبودية، فساهمت بقدرٍ ملحوظ في إزكاء شعلة المطالبة بحقوق الإنسان وإلغاء تجارة الرقيق.
