في تخصص المكتبات والمعلومات هناك علمان مراوغان لا يمكن الإمساك بتلاليبهما أو وضع حدود قاطعة مانعة جامعة لكل منهما. أما العلم الأول فهو الببليوجرافيا الذي تطور عبر خمسة وعشرين قرناً من الزمان، وأما العلم الثاني فهو التوثيق الذي انبثق من علم الببليوجرافيا مع نهاية القرن التاسع عشر ومطالع القرن العشرين قدر والمشكلة الأساسية فى كل من هذين العلمين أنهما قد يتسعان ليبتلعا في جوفيهما كل علم المكتبات والمعلومات وقد يتقلصان ليغدو كل منهما مجرد فرع صغير من فروع علم المكتبات والمعلومات. في بحثنا هنا نحاول تحليل علم الببليوجرافيا من الناحيتين النظرية والتطبيقية، ولذلك يعنا إلى تقسيم هذا البحث إلى ستة عناصر أساسية هي: المفاهيم والدلالات، الببليوجرافيا في العصور القديمة، الببليوجرافيا في العصور الوسطي والإسلامية والمسيحية، الببليوجرافيا في العصور الحديثة، أنواع الببليوجرافيا فئات، المشروع الببليوجرافي. وأخيراً نطرح السؤال الذي طرح منذ قرن من الزمان هل الببليوجرافيا قطة سمينة؟ وسوف نكشف بعد الانتهاء من قراءة بحثان هذا أنها فعلاً قطة سمينة وثمينة.
