بنى الراوي إيرنست همنجواي روايته هذه على فكرة رفض الحرب، لأن من يدعو إليها هم أولئك المتعطشون إلى الدماء، فيقدمون الرجال وقوداً تستعر بهم، ولا تنطفئ إلا بالدمار والقضاء على الإنسانية قضاءً مبرماُ. ولقد عانت الدول المتناحرة من ويلات الحرب العالمية الأولى التي حصدت الأخضروالبابس، وأزهقت الأرواح، لذا كان لا بد من أصوات تصرخ في وجه تادمار قائلة: لا للحرب. ولما كانت الدول المتناحرة قد تسابقت إلى صنع الأسلحة الفتاكة من خفيفة وثقيلة، فقد وجدنا السلاح هو السلاح أينما ذهب وحل، أداة صمتء مجنونة لا تفرق بين عسكري ومدني، وصغير وكبير، ورجل وإمراة، ومحارب ومسعف، فهو يقتل حيث اتجه، فالكل عنده سواسية، ولذلك كان لا بد من رفض هذا السلاح القاتل، ورميه، والعودة إلى السلم نبي بني البشر. لذا كانت هذه الرواية في عنوانها صرخة في وجه الحرب: كفاكم تناحراً وعودوا إلى رشدكم، وليلتفت كل إلى حياته يطورهل وينهض بها. لقد قضت الحرب على الحضارة الإنسانية، وإن كان لا بد من السلاح لحماية الحضارة الإنسانية والدفاع عنها ضد القتلة المجرمين، فليكن الساح وسيلة إلى غاية في حد ذاته.
