قد ساعدني على القيام بالدراسة العلمية لمصادر التاريخ ما تجمع لدي من شراء بعض الكتب التي كانت دار الكتب تقوم بنشرها بعد تحقيقها بواسطة مركز تحقيق التراث بالدار، إلى جانب ما كانت تضطلع بنشره دار الشعب من إصدارات شعبية لكتب التراث في فصلات تصدر أسبوعياً تحت مظلة سلسلة بعنوان "كتاب الشعب" وهذه وتلك كانت أثمانها فى متناول القدرة آنذاك. وفى أواخر السبعينيات ذاتها دعيت إلى السفر إلى السودان أستاذاً زائراً في جامعة أم درمان الإسلامية، وكان من بين مقررات قسم الوثائق والمكتبات بها مقرر مصادر التاريخ والتراث العربي، وطلب مني أن أضع مذكرة للطلاب "الأستنسل" التي كانت متاحة آنذاك، فلم تكن الأساليب المتطورة في النسخ قد عرفت بعد، وكنت قد قررت في ذلك الوقت إخراج كتاب في الموضوع عندما يتيسر ذلك.
