يقدم المؤلف في هذا الكتاب دراسة ميدانية للخلفية التاريخية للواقع الاجتماعي لسكان المناطق الجنوبية في ميسان وأماكن استيطانها في الحقبة الزمنية المنصرفة السابقة على العام 1968. كما يركز على أهم التغيرات التي شملت بقاعاً واسعة من الريف العراقي، وفي مقدمة هذه التغيرات الهجرة من الريف إلى المدينة.
لذا يتناول المؤلف بالدرس أحوال الفرجين في مراكز استيطانهم إضافة إلى تناوله بعض الأمور المتعلقة بتصريف شؤون الحياة اليومية للأسر الفرحين ضمن المناطق الواقعة في مناطق المشرح، والكحلاء، وآل أزيرج، وقلعة صالح.
كما يعرض المؤلف لبعض العلاقات الإنسانية فيما بين الفلاحين وحالات التفاعل داخل العمليات الزراعية للسنوات التي سبقت قيام ثورة 14 تموز 1958. وفي معرض حديثة عن أصل الزراعة في جنوب العراق. يشير إلى أن الحياة الزراعية في الجنوب العراقي مرت بثلاث مراحل في مجرى تقدمها، أولاها تبدأ في أوائل عهد استيطان السومريين الأصليين وتوطيد حياتهم الزراعية البدائية في منطقة الأهوار، وفيما يتعلق بمصادر هذه الدراسة فقد ذكر المؤلف أنها جاءت عن طريق معايشته الميدانية لبعض الأقسام الجنوبية من الريف العراقي، وكذلك من مقابلاته الشخصية مع كبار السن الذين عاصروا الريف وهاجروا إلى المدن.
