اقتضت طبيعة المادة الى أن تقسم إلى تمهيد وبابين.أما التمهيد فقد وقفت عند اشتقاق كلمة الرثاء والكلو القضاة، دفة لها كالندب والتأبين والتعزية والنعي، ثم تناولت شعر الرثاء الأندلسي قبل عصر الطوائف وأهم الشعراء وقصائدهم أما الباب الأول فقد تناولت موضوعات الرثاء، فدرست في الفصل الأول رثاء النفس الذي ازداد في هذا العصر لقساوة الظروف السياسية ورثاء الأهل والأقارب، ثم رثاء الأصدقاء من العلماء والشعراء والكتاب. ثم وقفت عند رثاء رجال الدولة من الأمراء والوزراء والقضاة، وخصصت الفصل الثاني لدراسة رثاء الدول والمدن والديار والآثار وسبب ظهورها.
