"لا يكون المرء مطابقاً لذاته إلا إذا كان بمفرده، لذلك، فالكاره للعزلة كاره للحرية، إذ لا تكون احراراً إلا في عزلتنا، فكل إختلاط بالناس يُلازمه الإكراه لزوم الظل لصاحبه، ويفرض على المُخالط تقديم تضحيات وتنازلات باهظة بمقاييس الميالين بطبعهم إلى الإنفراد، والعزلة، والمُشمئزين من المخالطة؛ لذلك، فقيمة الأنا وجودتها من عدمها تُقاس بالنفور من العزلة أو يتحمّلها بل الهيام بها، والهيام بها يتساوق مع الجودة العالية للأنا والشخصية.
فاليائس يستشعر بؤسه، وبكل جوارحه، في عزلته التي لا يطيقها جرّاء ذلك، كما يستشعر الراقي عظمته وسموه بكل جوارحه أيضاً في وحدته.
إن العزلة هي الميزان الذي تُقاس به جودة الأشخاص من عدمها، فبقدر ميل الشخص إليها، وعشقه لها، يكون أهلاً لأخذ مكانه في مَجْمع الراقين وصفوة المُنتجيين، وإنها لمتعة لا تضاهيها متعة أن يجمع الشخص بين العزلة الجسدية والعزلة الفكرية المتناغمين أشد تناغم، وإن تعذر على هذه الطبقة من الناس تحقيق هذا المطلب، فإنك تجدهم منزعجين بالغ الإنزعاج لأن الظروف القاهرة أجبرتهم على معاشرة أناسٍ متبايني الطباع والميولات والمقاصد".
