شهدت مصر تطورات عميقة الجذور في العصر الفاطمي، فعلى الجانب السياسي شهدت نظام الخلافة، الذي أظل أجزاء كثيرة من العالم الإسلامي، كما شهدت تطورات اقتصادية واجتماعية عظيمة، وقد شاركت منطقة الصعيد الأعلى بقسط وافر في اقتصاد مصر في ذلك العصر الحافل بالأحداث، فازدهرت الحياة الإقتصادية في الإقليم لكونه معبراً للحجاج والتجار إلى الأراضي المقدسة في بلاد الحجاز، كما حازت منتجات الصعيد الأعلى الزراعية شهرة ذائعة الصيت كالتمر وقصب السكر وغيرهما، وكانت تلك المنتجات تصدر إلى الخارج، وازدهرت مدن الصعيد الأعلى، فنشطت حركة التجارة الخارجية مع البلاد المجاورة، وحرصت الدولة الفاطمية على الاهتمام بثغر أسوان، فتحملت عبء الدفاع عن الثغر وتحصينه بالقوات الكافية، وعلى الجانب الاجتماعي شهدت منطقة الصعيد الأعلى هجرة القبائل العربية التي نزحت عقب الفتح العربي، وغدا إقليم الصعيد الأعلى أشبه بمستودع بشري هائل، ولم يحظ بالهتمام من جانب المؤرخين، إذ يلمس الباحث أن جل الدراسات والبحوث العلمية التي تناولت بالدراسة والبحث هذا الإقليم في العصر الفاطمي تكاد أن تكون قليلة.
ورغم ذلك فقد حاولت أن ألقي الضوء على هذه الموضوعات التي تعرضت لها في هذا البحث وأني أرجو أن تكون هذه الدراسة خطوة على الطريق إلى دراسة جادة لأقاليم العالم الإسلامي في عصورها المختلفة وفي أقطارها المتعدد، وقد قسمت بحثي إلى ثلاثة أبواب:
الباب الأول: العوامل المؤثرة في الحياة الإقتصادية، الباب الثاني: الحياة الإقتصادية، الباب الثالث: عناصر السكان.
