Salwa Bakr is an Egyptian critic, novelist and author. She was born in the Matariyya district in Cairo in 1949 and studied business at Ain Shams University, gaining a BA degree in 1972 and went on to earn another BA in literary criticism in 1976, before embarking on a career in journalism. She has worked as a film and theatre critic for various Arabic newspapers and magazines.
Bakr's work often deals with the lives of the impoverished and the marginalized. In 1985, she published her first collection of short stories, "Zinat at the President's Funeral", which was an immediate success. She has published several collections of short stories since. Her debut novel is "Wasf al-Bulbul" (1993).

كيف يتحول "قبر" عادى لامرأة عادية.. كانت تعيش بين الناس منذ وقت قريب إلى مزار ومقام ، وتتحول هى إلى صاحبة كرامات ومعجزات يتحاكى عنها كل من آتاها ملبيا؟!.. حتى تستطيع الإجابة على هذا التساؤل الغريب لابد من قراءة رواية "مقام عطية" التى قدمتها الكاتبة الروائية "سلوى بكر" في هذا الكتاب. فالقصة تتعدى حدود "المقام" والمقابر التى لم تعد مهجورة، إنما وصلت إلى عالم الآثار وما يحدث فيه من تلاعب، وما يحدث فيه من تلاعب وما يخفيه من أسرار تكشفها "عزة يوسف" الصحفية بمجلة الصباح.. فقد آثرت كشف الحقيقة على الخوف والنجاة بحياتها، فتحت ملف قضية "الست عطية" وما أحاطه من ملابسات تتعلق بتاريخ أمه يكفيها ما هى فيه من أزمات وكوارث. فنجد القصة ويشارك في روايتها كل من يمت بصلة للموضوع بدءا من ابنها العائد من الخارج ووصولا إلى أحد الطلبة الجامعيين الذي شارك في حمل نعشها.. ومرورا بالجيران والتربي وعالم الآثار وحتى الصحفية ذاتها إنها قصة لا تملى عليك رأيا أو حقيقة ولكنها تقدم لك الأسباب التى تصل بك إليها.. وإن تعددت صورها وتنوعت الاتجاهات والسبل، الكتاب لا يقتصر على رواية "مقام عطية" فقط .. وإنما يشاطرها في صفحاته قصص أخرى.
