قدم بياجه وجهة نظر جديدة عن تطور الطفل الفكري مبنية على أبحاثه المبدعة عن الأطفال. فتحت أبحاثه أفقاً جديداً لعلم المعرفة، مبينة حقيقة وجود أنواع عديدة من الذكاء المعرفي. وانطلاقاً من مشاهداته العديدة أبدع بياجيه أسلوباً جديداً لتطبيق المهمات الاختبارية مع الأطفال ضمن أسلوب التشخيص العيادي. ووضع منهجية جديدة لدراسة تطور تفكير الطفل، ومثل كل الأعمال الرائدة، لم يكن عمل بياجيه كاملاً أو نهائياً. بل هو من وضع حجر الأساس في مجال التشخيص المعرفي، حتى يبني العلماء الآخرون عليه.
وانطلاقاً من جهود بياجيه ونظريته، فتحت الأبواب لباقي مجالات العلوم العقلانية، فأبحاثه أثرت في العديد من العلماء المختصين بمجالات أخرى وطورت المفاهيم التي تخص نمو الطفل الفكري.
ومن أجل توضيح هذه النظرية عنيت "منى عز الدين الشوّا" بوضع هذه الدراسة التي تعرض فيها الحقائق المستخلصة من أبحاث بياجيه وتجاربه وتجارب زملائه وخبرات المربين التابعين له وأساليب تطبيقهم للنظرية من خلال استنتاجاتهم الشخصية.
يتوجه هذا الكتاب إلى جميع العاملين في حقل التربية، مركزاً عموماً على مدى استيعاب الطفل وسيرورة تفكيره المعرفية في مختلف مراحل نموه، خاصة بين عمر 3 إلى 6 سنوات. راعت المؤلفة في كتابه هذا البحث استعمال أسلوب مبسط، كي تصبح النظرية في متناول جميع القراء، إن كانوا مبتدئين أو ذوي خبرة طويلة في مجال التربية. وهدفها من هذا العرض هو مساعدة القراء على تطبيق النظرية، وإعطائهم صورة موضوعية واضحة تفتح لهم آفاقاً جديدة سهلة التطبيق.
