في عمله هذا يتناول الشيخ "بهاء الدين سالم" الدور الذي يضطلع بع الدعاة والعلماء المسلمون في الحياة المعاصرة. ويخص بالذكر خطباء الجمعة لما لهم من اتصال مباشر بالجمهور. من هنا وجب على الخطيب أن يكون مجتهداً في تحصيل العلوم العصرية والشرعية في آن معاً والإحاطة بظروف المجتمع الإجتماعية والتقنية والعلمية والسياسية... بهدف أن يكون قريب ذهنياً ومعرفياُ مع من يستمع إليه من الناس بمختلف ثقافاتهم، واتجاهاتهم ولتوصيل الرسالة المحمدية كما أراد الله دون الانحراف عن مبادئ الإسلام السليم. من هنا يعيب المؤلف على خطباء الجمعة في عصرنا تحويلهم المسجد إلى منبر خاص يعرضون فيه آراؤهم الشخصية كما يروها أو يفهموها هم وينسوا ما أراد الله أو ما بيَن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم. لذلك لا بد من السعي الحثيث لإعادة خطبة الجمعة إلى مكانتها حتى تتمكن من تأدية دورها كما يجب وحتى لا تتحول إلى مجرد كلام يلقى على مسامع الناس فلا يجد فيهم أثراً ولا تجاوباً. وأما قدوتنا جميعاً في الإصلاح هو نبينا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم فأول مراتب الإصلاح في خطب الجمعة هو تدبر صفات وأساسيات الخطبة عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ومحاولة استلهام ملامح الخطبة عنده.
وهذا الكتاب يزدحم بصور مشرقة عن عهد المسلمين الأوائل وصفاتهم وإخلاصهم للدعوةـ مروراً بعلماء ودعاة معاصرين كان لهم الأثر الأكبر في نشر رسالة الإسلام بما يتوافق مع حاجات الناس وتدبر أحوالهم، وتطور وعيهم، فلم تعد الخطبة مجرد نصح وإرشاد بل أصبحت مسؤولية الدعاة أكبر في عصر انتشرت فيه ظواهر التطرف والإرهاب والتصقت بالإسلام، وهذا يعني وجوب الدفاع عن الإسلام بالعلم الواقع ومن خلال الظروف التي يتحرك فيها المسلم وهذا ما نبه إليه الشيخ "يوسف القرضاوي" في (فقه الأولويات) أي وضع كل شيء في مرتبته بالعدل من الأحكام والقيم والأعمال، ثم يقدم الأولى فالأولى، بناء على معايير شرعية صحيحة يهدي إليها العقل.
