انتهى عهد الإمام أحمد بموته، وإن كان الموت لم يوقف تداعيات فترة حكمه البائسة والتى بدأت فى الظهور بمجرد غيابه، وبعد أسبوع سقطت الإمامة الزيدية السياسية في اليمن ، ومع سقوطها بدأت مرحلة جديدة فى تاريخ اليمن المعاصر. كان غياب الإمامة كطريقة فى الحكم، وشكل من أشكال السلطة حدثا مهما بكل ما تعنيه الكلمة من مدلول سياسي وديني، فخلال إحدى عشر قرنا كان دور الأئمة حاضرا، صاحب هذا الحضور نفوذ ديني يمتد ليشمل اليمن الطبيعي كله، أو ينحسر ويتراجع شمالا حتى جبال صعده. ومع كل تراجع كانت هناك فرصة جديدة للتمدد جنوبا، لأن في الزيدية كمذهب ديني روحا ثورية متمردة، ترفض الظلم والاستبداد، وتدعو إلى الخروج على الحاكم الظالم مهما كانت ادعاءاته السياسية والدينية
