يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته دراسة فنية في شعر خليل الخوري انتظمت في فصول ثلاثة تسبقها مقدمة، يتصدر كل فصل مفهوم نظري لموضوع الفصل، تلي ذلك المباحث الرئيسة التي تتشعب هي الأخرى إلى ما هو أصغر منها.
ضم الفصل الأول ثلاثة مباحث رئيسة، هي: معظم خليل الخوري الشعري، واستعمالاته اللغوية، والتكراراً.
أما الفصل الثاني فخصص للصورة الشعرية محاولاً تبيان ملامحها في شعر الشاعر من خلال اثنين من أهم وسائل تشكيلها، وهما: الاستعارة، والرمز، إذ تناولت من الاستعارة بالدرس ثلاثة أنواع، هي: الاستعارة الجزئية، والتعالق الاستعاري، والاستعارة الكلية.
كما تناولت من الرمز ثلاثة أنواع، هي الرمز الطبيعي، والرمز الديني، والرمز التشكيلي، فضلاً عما ضم العنوان (رموز أخرى) من إشارة إلى الرموز النادرة.
ويبقى الفصل الثالث –وهو الأخير- للموسيقى الشعرية في محاولة لتلمسها في شعر الشاعر، وذلك بعد تقسيمها إلى نوعيها: الموسيقى الداخلية، وموسيقى الإطار. أما الموسيقى الداخلية فدرست أربعاً ن وسائل تحققها، هي: تكرار الصوت، والتجنيس، والتدويم، ور الإعجاز على الصدور.
أما مادة الدراسة فاعتمدت مجموعات خليل الخوري الشعرية السبع، وهي: (حبات قلب-1961)، وصلوات للريح-1963)، و(لا در في الصدف-1963)، و(رسائل إلى أبي الطيب-1971)، و(أغاني النار-1977)، و(اعتراف في حضرة البحر-1983)، و(تقاسيم على وتر البطولة-1987)، فضلاً عن شيء من قصيدته الطويلة "المجزرة" وبعض النماذج مما نشر في الصحف والمجلات.
