كان لعثمان رضي الله عنه الفضل في تثبيت دعائم الإسلام في البلاد التي فتحت في عهد الصديق وعمر كما كان له الفضل في مد ضوء الإسلام إلى أرمينيا والقوقاز وغير ذلك من الاماكن التي امتد إليها الفتح الإسلامي، ولولا الفتنة التي حدثت وأودت بحياة ثالث الخلفاء الراشدين، لانطلق الإسلام إلى أفاق أرحب، ولكن هذه الفتنة التي اندلعت أوقفت الزحف الإسلامي، ولم تكن هذه الفتنة يمكن أن تحدث في عهد سلفه العظيم عمر بن الخطاب لشدته ومهابته، وقدرته على كبح جماح من يحاول أن يشق عصا الطاعة.
وكانت مدة خلافته اثنا عشرة سنة إلا اثنى عشر يوماً، وقد اختلف المؤرخون والرواة عن سنه رضي الله عنه يوم غادر دنيانا إلى رحاب ربه، فمن قائل كان في الخامسة والسبعين من العمر، و قال البعض كان في التسعين من عمره مهما يكن من أمر، فغن الحديث عن خلافة عثمان رضي الله عنه هو حديث عن فترة هامة من فترات التاريخ الإلاسمي، يجب أن نتوقف عنده كثيراً لما كان له من تأثير خطير على مسيرة التاريخ الإسلامي والفكر الإسلامي عبر مختلف العصور.
