كان أئمة لأهل البيت عليهم السلام يفيضون على الأمة بعلومهم، يجيبون على أسئلة السائلين ويفتحون أبواب المعرفة للناهلين، إن الإمام جعفر بن محمد الصادق من هذه الدوحة، استغل فترة ضعف الدولة الأموية وبداية تأسيس العباسيين لدولتهم، لذا أسس مدرسته الفكرية، فقصده طلاب العلم والحقيقة يغرفون من بحار علومه.
ومن بين هؤلاء الأصحاب كان المفضل بن عمر الجعفرى الذي هاله ما سمعه من بعض الملحدين والشاكين بقدرة الله تعالى، فتوجه إلى الإمام عليه السلام يطرح مخاوفه وهواجسه وعدم قدرته على إجابتهم، فما كان من الإمام الصادق لا الطلب من تلميذه أن يأتيه وخصص له وقتاً لذلك، فصار المفصل يأتي الإمام وبدون ما كان يلقيه أمامه من معارف وآفاق تتناول مختلف جوانب الكون فمن جسم الإنسان وقواه الفعلية والنفسية، إلى عالم الحيوان وما أبدعه الخالق فيها من بدائع الروعة وعظيم الصفة إلى ما يحيط بنا من شمس وقمر وإجرام سماوية، وما تحويه الأرض من معادن. وهذا الكتاب يحتوي على ما جاء في هذه المجالس من أحاديث ووصايا.
