راحة القلب فى الليل العينان اللتان فقدتا الأبصار. القلب الذى لم يعد يدق لامرأة ثانية. الأصدقاء الذين اختصروا فى واحد أو اثنين. الابن الوحيد. الزوجة التى لم تعد تعنيه أو يعنيها منذ اكتشافها علاقته بثريا. كل هذا بات كالصدى. يتحدث مع ابنه من وقت لآخر، يحاسبه على فلوس مزارع الدواجن ومناحل العسل ومحلات اللبن والبيض. يناقشه بحماس وعقل صاح. هذا ما يظهر. لكن بداخله خبا كل شىء، انطفأت القناديل كما انطفأ بصره. لم يتبق له سوى الليل. هل يقدر أن يقبض على الليل ويقطعه قطعاً صغيرة، يدفع بها فى قلوب المحزونين؟ لا شىء يبقى، الكل باطل. لم يخطئ فى حق زوجته. تزوجها كما أراد أبيه، بنت ناس وغنية، عاشا معاً بلا منغصات أو مشاكل حتى أنجبا سامى. استراح واستراحت وكفت أسرته وأسرتها عن الكلام والتلميحات الفارغة لقد انقلب كيانه فى النهار، عندما رآها تقف مع صبحي، مسئول مزرعة الدواجن. كان يتناقشان فى الأسعار وشكوتها من الخسارة بعد أن تأخذ الفراخ والبط وتبيعه فى السوق. لفت نظره طريقتها العملية فى البيع والشراء وذكاؤها فى تخفيض السعر وكأنها تاجر متمرس. مع ذلك تبدو جميلة، ممشوقة الجسم، وجهها أبيض مستدير، لها عينان سوداوان وفم صغير. عرف من صبحي أنها تعيش مع طفليها، بعد وفاة زوجها. عندما تخرج تتركهما فى رعاية الجيران. ليس لها أهل غير عمتها، تزورها على فترات. تعامل الرجال والنساء على حد سواء، بلا حب أو كره. لقد أحبها وأحب كلامها وطريقة وقفتها ومشيتها وأسلوبها فى معاملة الناس حولها
