وعلى الرغم من أن الكتاب ينصرف إلى وضع سيرة للحصرى، في حياته وفكره، إلا أنه يرسم من حوله إطاراً تاريخياً يوضح بعض ملامح نشوء الفكر القومي العربي في القرن العشرين، مما يجعله كتاب تاريخ أيضاً، لا سيرة وحسب. ففيه رواية لعدد كبير من المساجلات والمعارك الفكرية والسياسية التي خاضها الحصري على مدى نصف قرن من الزمن.
وعلى الرغم من أن الكاتب أميركي، إلا أن مقدار الإنصاف فيه لم نعهده لدى الأميركيين حين يكتبون في المسائل العربية. وفي إمكان تنبه سلفاً إلى المسائل التي تولىّ المترجم التنبيه إليها في تصدير الكتاب.
