في كتابه هذا، يتتبع الأستاذ نوّاف نصّار سيرة حياة "عباس محمود العقاد" في كل مراحل حياته، وفي مختلف المجالات التي برع فيها وهي الأدب والتاريخ والسياسة والأديان. وفي هذا السياق يقسم المؤلف كتابه إلى فصول تبدأ بحديث عن النشأة وبداياته في الكتابة في بعض الصحف المعروفة آنذاك كالدستور، ثم عمله في ديوان الأوقاف ومعرفته للفساد الحكومي الذي حاربه العقاد، ثم تبدأ مرحلة تعرفه على أحد رموز الوطنية "سعد زغلول" وانضمامه إلى "حزب الوفد" حتى غدا كاتبه الأول ضد أعدائه من حزب "الأحرار الدستوريون" وقد أفرد المؤلف هنا عدداً من المقالات السياسية لتلك الفترة، وعرض عبارته الشهيرة في تحدي الملك فؤاد في قاعة البرلمان، بعد ذلك تأتي مرحلة محاكمة العقاد وسجنه. وبعد خروجه من السجن يواصل العقاد حملاته على الوزارات الرجعية في بلاده وخاصة وزارة توفيق نسيم، ولكن حزب الوفد أيد وزارة توفيق نسيم، وطالب النحاس العقاد بإيقاف حملته عليها فأبى العقاد لأسباب وطنية، وأنشق عن الوفد. وهنا يعرض المؤلف لموقف العقاد المعارض لمعاهدة 1936 الشهيرة تتوالى الأحداث حتى نجد العقاد ينضم إلى حزب يميني هو "الهيئة السعدية". وفي هذه الفترة نرى العقاد ميالاً إلى اليمين، وبلغت به عداوته للوفد أن جامل الملك فاروق وأيده كرهاً في الوفد في صراعه مع فاروق، وفي الفترة ذاتها يعرض المؤلف لموقف العقاد ضد النازية وهتلر ممثلاً ذلك في كتابه هتلر في الميزان، مما أدى إلى رحيله إلى السودان ثم عاد إلى مصر وقد أيقن أن الألمان سنهزمون في "العلمين" وحصل ما توقعه وصرح به. بعد تلك الفترة يبتعد العقاد عن السياسة ويصب اهتمامه على الإنتاج الأدبي والفكري، حيث يعرض المؤلف مجموعة من الأبحاث والتراجم التي سجلت العقاد من الخالدين والعباقرة حتى يومنا هذا، فيتمعن في كتاب عبد الناصر "فلسفة الثورة" ويعلق عليه، وبعد ثورة يوليو يكون العقاد قد أنجز 40 كتاباً، ونال في العام 1960 جائزة الدولة التقديرية. وأخيراً مرض العقاد ووفاته واثر ذلك على محبيه وجمهوره.
